Why Choose Florida Tech for Biomedical Engineering?

As a biomedical engineering student at Florida Tech, you’ll benefit from one-on-one guidance from professors and industry partners dedicated to mentoring our students.

Florida Tech’s faculty is a big reason we’re one of the top biomedical engineering schools. Many faculty members are involved in research related to biomedical engineering and are experts in mechanical and aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, electrical and computer engineering and computer science.

Our professors showcase their biomedical engineering expertise in areas such as optical tomography for cancer detection, blast-related injury research, speech production, artificial intelligence, orthopedics and medical trauma prevention.

The biomedical engineering program at Florida Tech is a close-knit community led by faculty members who are passionate about student success. Our small class sizes and low student-to-faculty ratio encourage close collaboration and mentorship, as well as individual creativity and leadership.

At Florida Tech, internships for biomedical engineering provide real-world experience and prepare you to stand out in the job market after college. We’re in one of the largest high-tech workforce areas in the country—that means numerous internship and employment opportunities for our students.

Through the cooperative education, or co-op, program and capstone projects, you’ll have opportunities to work closely with a faculty advisor and local leaders representing the biotechnology, health care or medical industries, and with local physicians at medical centers and hospitals around Brevard County.

At Florida Tech, the high-tech tools of biomedical engineering are at your disposal. Learn in labs dedicated to experimentation and research in lasers, instrumentation, medical imaging, microscopy, neural imaging, physiology, biomaterials and biomechanics.

Our location also makes Florida Tech the perfect place for a biomedical engineering degree. Our 130-acre campus is in the heart of the Space Coast — NASA-Kennedy Space Center on Cape Canaveral is just north of us. We’re minutes away from the Indian River Lagoon, the most diverse estuary in North America and home to more than 4,300 species of plants and animals.

When it’s time to kick back and relax, you’re just minutes from 72 miles of beautiful beaches and a short trip from the Florida Keys or the Orlando theme parks. But you won’t have to travel far for rest and relaxation. We also have a rich campus life with intramural and collegiate sports, over 200 campuswide student organizations and clubs, and a wide variety of social activities.

As Florida's STEM University, Florida Tech is one of the best schools for premed and a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering is excellent preparation for medical school. Florida Tech alumni with an interest in biomedical engineering often pursue careers as physicians and other health care practitioners in a variety of specialties.

Here, you will find the coursework, research opportunities and advising you need to be ready to apply to medical school. We also offer special direct admission pathways into select programs through our partnerships with Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (located right on the Florida Tech campus) and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.
